Why donate blood?
• There is no substitute for human blood. It cannot be manufactured.
• Blood cannot be stored for long. There is a constant need for blood donation to replenish stocks.
• Blood donated by you can save the life of someone who is undergoing surgery or has lost blood in an injury or childbirth.
• Blood is also needed by cancer patients and patients of Haemophilia, Thalassaemia and severe anaemia.
• Nobody knows who will require blood, when and where. A good and regular donor base in the community is insurance for all.
• Donating blood makes you aware of your blood group. In addition, you get a free health checkup.

Why is voluntary blood donation important?
Voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation is the source of the healthiest blood. Blood from professional donors is banned in our country since January 1998.

Who can donate blood?
Any healthy person in the age group of 18-60 with a body weight of more than 45 kg. 

How much can I donate?
You can donate one unit of blood at a time without it causing you any harm at all. Your body naturally replenishes this amount of blood within 24 hours to 7 days.

Is blood donation safe?
Yes, it is. You cannot get any infection or any blood transmissible infections including HIV, Hepatitis B&C, Syphilis and Malaria while donating blood. All equipment used during the process is sterile and safe from infections.

Will I feel dizzy or weak due to the loss of blood?
No, you will not. You will only be accepted as a blood donor if you weigh more than 45 kg and have an adequate haemoglobin level. You will not feel any weakness or discomfort. You can resume your normal activities, including driving, immediately after donation.

How much time will it take to donate blood ?
It will take one hour of your time including the time taken for the free medical checkup. The actual process of blood donation only takes a few minutes.

How often can I donate blood?
Blood can be donated once in 3 months. In other words, you can donate blood upto 4 times a year.

Where can I donate blood?
You can donate blood at a licensed blood bank or at a voluntary blood donation camp organised by a licensed blood bank or hospital.
