Sexually
Transmitted diseases increase the chance of HIV infection.
This highlights the need for concomitant control of STDs as a
programme strategy.
The STD Control Component of
National AIDS Control Programme has two major objectives.
- Reduce STD cases and
thereby control HIV Transmission by minimizing the risk
factor and
- Prevent short term as well
as long term morbidity and mortality due to STDs
Maharashtra has established
54 STD centres in the State. Out of these 54 centres 11 STD
clinics are at sub districts level in high prevalence
districts. All these centres are provided with STD Medicines,
Consumables equipments, TV/VCR and other inputs. State has
completed training of syndromic management for STDs for all
Medical Officers and health workers.
Changes
required in Phase III:
- Instead of organizing FHAC
program once in a year, it is suggested that the funds
given for FHAC be used for purchase of STD medicines, so
that the patients can be treated through-out the year.
- Facility of Syndromic
management be extended to PHC level.
- A post of Counsellor be
provided to all STD Clinics so that STD patients are
properly counseled for behavioural change
